We invite you to join the FABULOUS Lily Chin in one of her favorite destinations in the world...the French and Italian Riviera! We are so thrilled to have Lily teaching her unsurpassed knitting and crochet workshop, and we can't think of a better place for our students to enjoy 10 days of quality one-on-one time with her!  Lily IS without doubt one of the fiber industry's leading designers, knowledgeable authorities and entertaining media personalities, and her classes are riveting, energetic, and inspiring.  Those of us who have been fortunate to take a class with Lily or have heard her speak know that one day spent with her is equal to having taken several days worth of classes somewhere else. The wealth of knowledge that Lily shares with her students is astounding, and her teaching style is always fresh, energizing and confidence-inspiring so all types of learners are successful in their new skills!

You won't want to miss this incredible opportunity to enjoy Lily's workshop AND explore the Riviera with her!  Lily has spent significant time in this part of the world and knows the places we visit inside and out as well as a local!  Known as a yarn magnet, Lily has the uncanny ability to locate yarn in every part of the world she has visited. We will be visiting several wonderful yarn shops from Nice, France all the way to Rapallo, Italy including Annie Blatt - Bouton D'Or and Phildar.

Additionally, Lily's established position in the world of fashion, knitwear and textiles enables her to enrich our very special visits to some unique textile destinations: a private visit to Tessitura Gaggioli, known for the hand production on 16th century looms of the world renown Ligurian damask and silk fabrics and Genoese velvet in existance for 500 years; An exclusive, very rare tour of Loro Piana's headquarters and main factory to view cashmere being transformed from raw material into their beautiful cashmere garments renown throughout the world.  We will be shown their unique processes for treating woven and knitted cashmere fabric to bring out its finest qualities. Colourmart Yarns works with Loro Piana to produce their famous 100 percent cashmere yarn loved by knitters and crocheters around the world.

Come be inspired and energized by Lily... your experience with her truly will be the one that you will talk about for years to come, and her workshop will stand out as one of the most influential classes you will ever take in your journey as a knitter/ crocheter!

WORKSHOP LOCATION:

Lily Chin's workshop vacation explores one of our favorite locations in the world, the French Riviera and the Italian Riviera. We begin in Nice, France, and work our way through Monaco, Monte Carlo, Genova, legendary Portofino, Santa Margherita, and Zoagli  to our homebase in Rapallo, Italy! Imagine sitting along the promenades and beaches of these famous stretchs of oceanfront, enjoying the sun on your face while you knit, crochet or spin the time away in such an exotic location!

WORKSHOP CLASS #1:

WEAVING TECHNIQUES AS APPLIED TO KNITS (6 hours):
  • Proficiency Level: Intermediate, can execute two-handed, stranded, Fair-Isle type color knitting.
  • Description: By combining another yarn to your knitting via methods borrowed from weaving, many aesthetic possibilities become apparent, certain problems may be solved, and a new technique is added to your oeuvre. Textures are easily obtainable, colors may be taken more advantage of, and patterning is more accessible. Novelty yarns are handled better, less yarn might be used, gorgeous but uncomfortable fibers need not touch your skin, and stretching can be minimized.
  • Learn:
    • The "up/down" method of applying a separate yarn onto knits.
    • The "in/out" method of applying a separate yarn onto knits.
    • The slip stitch method of the same yarn as a "weft" thread.
    • Vertical weaves, color weaves, smocking weaves, and much more.
  • The applications of these techniques include:
    • What kinds of yarns are best suited for these fabrics.
    • What kinds of garments are best suited for these fabrics.
    • How to chart these weaves so you'll know what you'll be getting beforehand.
  • By the end of this workshop, you will have a sampler of knitted "woven" fabrics plus enough ideas to keep you in stitches for a very long, long time.

WORKSHOP CLASS #2:

CUSTOM FITTING EXISTING PATTERNS (6 hours):

Proficiency Level: At least advanced-intermediate, anyone who has an idea about very basics of pattern drafting or anyone who's altered existing patterns successfully.

Description: There are many patterns from yarn companies, magazines and books avaiable, but you want to change the neckline, lengthen the sleeves, etc. In this class you'll find out how to successfully personalize the fit of a pattern and cater it to yourselves or those you knit for. See how small alterations can make a garment hang better. Learn accessible alternatives for drop shoulders. You'll learn simple refinements and easy modifications that don't require extensive pattern re-writes, but will produce great results. Please note that this is not a "change the pattern to be another size" class.

WORKSHOP CLASS #3:

REVERSIBLE CABLES (6 hours):

Proficiency Level: At least advanced-beginner, anyone who's tried their hand at some kind of cable.

Description: Simple to execute, cables are almost always worked over stockinette stitch thereby producing a "wrong" side. This is not particularly attractive on a scarf or shawl or afghan where the "wrong side" will be in full view of the public. In this class, learn how cables work, which stitches, yarns and needles are ideal for these reversible cables, and how to chart them so you'll know what you'll be getting beforehand. By the end of this class, you will have a sampler of reversible cables plus enough ideas to keep you in stitches for a long, long time.

    • Lunch in Portofino is on your own to maximize your own personal exploration of this legendary fishing village. If you choose to have lunch with Daniela at her favorite caffe by the water's edge, she happily will introduce you to Portofino's special dessert: Paciugo (translation: a "mess" in Genoese dialect). The owners of this caffe' will make Paciugo for our group the way they have made it traditionally for Daniela and her family for almost 40 years since they opened their doors. Traditional Paciugo hasn't been available on menus anywhere in Portofino for at least 20 years, and the caffe' owners were thrilled to re-create the original confection for Daniela's yarn crawl tour group in July 2009. DAY SEVEN:
  • Zoagli, Italy:
    • A private tour of Tessitura Gaggioli, the historic silk, damask, and Genoese, silk flat velvet weaving studio that still produces the famous Genoese, centuries-old textile fabrics originating in the XII century. These beautiful fabrics, renown for their use in garments for Italian aristocracy in the 16th century and the Papacy for over 300 years, are still being woven by hand on looms dating from the 1500's and 1700's. We will have the privilege of visiting their studio and watching them work on these looms. We also will have the chance to examine finished fabrics up close.
    • Afternoon workshop class at the hotel.
    • Dinner at the hotel.

DAY EIGHT:
There is no workshop class today.
  • Genova, Italy (morning):
    • A scenic bus tour of the city's landmarks - Corso D'Italia and the shoreline, the Ducal Palace, Christopher Columbus' house, the Teatro Carlo Felice, Red Beard's Portal Arch into the city, the Imperial Palace,
    • A visit to a LYS owned by Filtes, a textiles and yarn factory specializing in luxury fibers.
    • Visits to 2 local yarn shops with an incredible variety of luxury yarns (cashmere anyone) as well as other needle arts supplies.
    • Lunch today will take place at the Antica Osteria di Vico Palla, a traditional Ligurian Pub in the historic district that dates back to the 1600's.  While living with the Genoese noble families of the era, the Flemish artist, Van Dyck, used to frequent the Vico Palla from 1621-1628 for its traditional, Ligurian seafood specialties.  The Vico Palla is considered to be one of the very last locales in Genova where these centuries old specialties still are served and prepared correctly.  Today's lunch is not included in the package so guests may choose from the extensive menu.
  • Valsesia, Italy (afternoon):
    • The special visit planned in Valsesia truly is one of the highlights of our Riviera tour.  Thanks to Daniela's connections in the region, our group will enjoy the privilege of a VERY exclusive private tour at Loro Piana's global headquarters, factory and nearby retail store.  Loro Piana is, without doubt, the number one Cashmere Label in the world.  The Loro Piana family started as merchants of wool fabrics at the beginning of the 19th century. In the 1940's, the company made a name for itself as a supplier of fine fabrics for the "haute couture" industry, which was a growing phenomenon in the post-war period. Today, Loro Piana owns 130 stores worldwide that distributes luxury sportswear and leisurewear, knitwear, accessories, home collections, bags, shoes and small leather goods, and one of the most complete made-to-measure services available on the market.  In the knitting world, Colourmart, a very respected British yarn label, works with Loro Piana to produce some of its exquisite 100% Cashmere yarn.
    • During the factory portion of our visit, our group will enjoy a rare opportunity to view the transformation of cashmere from raw material to finished product.  We also will watch the complex methods used to treat finished cashmere products that result in a superior garment.
    • Dinner at the hotel in Rapallo.
