They are  back!!!  Galina Khmeleva of Orenburg Russian Lace fame, and her husband, George, return to Italy in 2010 to teach another incredible Orenburg Russian Lace workshop in one of the most beautiful locations in the world, the Italian Dolomites in the Southern Tyrolean Alps, located just 68 miles from Venice, Italy!  Galina again will be sharing with you her decades of technical knitting experience and wealth of priceless expertise in the areas of Orenburg knitted lace in a whole new way!

Galina class 2009 Daniela's pics (23)We can't stop raving about the special workshop that Galina created just for our Fiber Summit Series Abroad workshop in 2009.   Besides the classes on techniques, patterns, edgings, and grafting,  Galina makes sure that every other aspect of this beautiful lace is explored... a pleasureable evening of spinning lace-weight cashmere yarn on a traditional Russian spindle in the hotel's salon accompanied by captivating stories of Russian life and culture;  "up-close" examinations of  Galina's suitcases full of fabulous shawls, including the ones featured in her books, magazine articles and patterns; Exclusive stash-enhancing "swan-dives" into the mountains of luscious yarn (and shawls!!!)  that Galina and George have brought to tantalize us...this workshop truly is an exquisite assault on all of a knitter's senses!

Galina was so excited to have ten days to explore calmly all the aspects of Orenburg knitted lace that she designed a special project item exclusively for our workshop that has never been offered anywhere else!  This project was a huge surprise for those of us who have taken classes with her before and the new approach to Galina's fabled classes made the experience fresh and exciting!

Galina wanted to offer a fun project that easily could be finished while still providing the opportunity for in-depth study on all aspects of Orenburg Lace. Each student goes home from the workshop with a beautiful keepsake of this once-in-a-lifetime workshop vacation in Italy!   Galina offers this special project  only in our workshops, so you won't want to miss this exciting opportunity!  For returning students, Galina has another unique project planned just for you, so make room in your suitcase!

Lace students of all levels are welcome in this workshop, but basic knitting skills are required and will not be covered. Chart/ graph reading experience is preferable.   Because this workshop includes 18 hours of classroom time plus ten days of quality, one-on-one time with Galina outside of the classroom, knitters with limited lace knitting experience or who have never explored lace knitting will be able to keep up without slowing down the rest of the class.  All of Galina's students come away knowledgeable and confident in their skills knitting beautiful, Orenburg Russian Knitted Lace!

And, as always, a class with Galina, will provide an unforgettable cultural experience!

galina with shawlAs a former clothing and costume designer who worked with the ‘aristocracy' of St. Petersburg, Russia's music and theater society, Galina was a pioneer in breaking down barriers in the"new" Russia that allowed Russian women the opportunity to achieve ownership status in private companies.

As the principal student to Orenburg's lace knitting elite, Galina brings the classic style and revered traditional knitting techniques of Russian lace to her classes. Her unique, inspiring and fun-loving teaching style has made her the guru of lace enthusiasts across the US. And as an extra bonus, Galina's classes are an awesome, unforgettable cultural experience.

WORKSHOP LOCATION:

The workshop will be held in San Martino di Castrozza (1450m), nestled at the base of the famous Pale di San Martino mountain chain, crown jewel of the Italian Dolomites, located just 68 miles North East of Venice, Italy. Rich in history and tradition, the resort town of San Martino di Castrozza began as a cherished alpine playground over 150 years ago frequented by European aristocracy and royalty. Today, it remains a charming, highly considered, European resort destination for all backgrounds and ages.  The workshop also includes a one-day visit to Venice, Italy.

STRUCTURE:

Classroom instruction conveniently is held in the hotel after lunch, when the local stores close for "pranzo," Italy's daily celebration of the mid-day meal with their families.

  • Six classroom sessions, each lasting three hours, will take place over the course of the trip for a total of 18 hours structured instruction.
  • Emphasis is placed on the one-on-one, private time spent between student and instructor.

Our mornings will be reserved for unique and special outings to explore our local surroundings, and will encompass a variety of experiences, including tantalizing cooking demonstrations in a variety of settings.

  • In addition to the wonderful morning excursions and our afternoon classes, you will enjoy two days with no structured class instruction. Students will have the choice of exploring on their own, or participating in some fiber arts-related guided group activities.
  • The first day off allows you the opportunity to explore the area on your own, relax in town, or take advantage of one of our signature events, the Alpine Adventure Agency's One Day Bus Tour of the Dolomitic Passes (offered "a la carte." to our group).
  • Venice takes center-stage for the final day of your dream, workshop vacation. If you like to ski or snowboard and are interested in spending your mornings on the slopes, you can read about our local slopes here, and view ski pass information here.
