Doris Chan and Karen Ratto-Whooley are teaming up for a once-in-a-lifetime crochet opportunity! You definitely do not want to miss out on an event that will have people talking for years to come!   Doris and Karen are amazing when teaching individually, but pairing them up for this workshop has created a powerhouse team without compare.

Doris has several amazing classes up her sleeve that will reflect her new book coming out in 2010.  We are so proud that our workshop will be Doris' teaching premiere abroad, and can't wait to see what she has in store!

Karen is going to knock our socks off with her special classes as well!  Karen is Italian, speaks Italian, and learned to crochet at a very young age from her Italian grandmother.   Karen also will be offering a tantalizing, mystery class that will feature a project from her new book coming out in the Fall of 2010.

We appreciate your patience as we rework our daily excursion schedule to accomodate a change in the town's calendar of activities during the weekend of the Festival. A detailed, daily itinerary (with lots of pictures!!!) will be online by April 10, 2010!

WORKSHOP LOCATION AND ACTIVITIES:

This very special workshop will be based in Fiera di Primiero in the Primiero Valley, just below San Martino di Castrozza, only 68 miles from Venice. Students will have the rare opportunity to witness one of the oldest, sacred rituals of this Alpine region - the Festival of the Desmontegar, which celebrates the return of the cows and shepherds from the high mountain meadows at the end of summer. It is the symbolic beginning of Autumn, and you won't want to miss the three days of festivities.  You will enjoy the amazing parade through town (with the cows decked out in flowers and alpine hats), artisan demonstrations on location including cheese-making, the extraction of honey from the combs, handspinning, felt-making, Tyrolean wood sculpting, and many other regional crafts; the Octoberfest finale featuring our very own yodeling trio, the Beatrich; an afternoon food and wine degustation sampling products from most of the local farms in the valley while listening to live music in the square, and an evening performance in the main square from the valley's a capella men's choir, the Coro Sass Maor.  You also enjoy personalized daily outings to San Martino di Castrozza, Passo Rolle, Baita Segantini, Val Canali and other nearby, spectacular settings where you will enjoy cable car rides, cooking demos, and private tours.  This workshop also includes a full day in Venice. Click here for some excellent videos (in english) on San Martino and the Primiero valley.

STRUCTURE:

Classroom instruction conveniently is held in the hotel after lunch, when the local stores close for "pranzo," Italy's daily celebration of the mid-day meal with their families.

  • Six classroom sessions, each lasting three hours, will take place over the course of the trip for a total of 18 hours structured instruction.
  • Emphasis is placed on the one-on-one, private time spent between student and instructor.
  • Our mornings will be reserved for unique and special outings to explore our local surroundings, and will encompass a variety of experiences, including tantalizing cooking demonstrations in a variety of settings.
  • In addition to the wonderful morning excursions and our afternoon classes, you will enjoy two days with no structured class instruction. Students will have the choice of exploring on their own, or participating in some fiber arts-related guided group activities.
  • The first day off allows you the opportunity to explore the area on your own, relax in town, or take advantage of one of our signature events, the Alpine Adventure Agency's One Day Bus Tour of the Dolomitic Passes (offered "a la carte" to our group).
  • Venice takes center-stage for the final day of your dream, workshop vacation.

DORIS CHAN'S CLASS SCHEDULE:

Doris Chan, crochet designer and author, enters the teaching arena with the world premier of her crochet workshops. Featuring materials drawn from her latest book, Crochet Lace Innovations, these classes will explore techniques for creating bold, beautiful lace garments, accessories and trims.

Skill Level Crochet skills required: participants must know how to make crochet fabric using basic stitches, including ch (chain), sl st (slip stitch), sc (single crochet), hdc (half-double crochet), dc (double crochet), tr (triple or treble crochet); familiarity with chainless foundation Fsc (foundation single crochet) helpful.

General Materials List:
Please bring basic supplies for crochet, including: various size crochet hooks, scissors, yarn needles, stitch markers or safety pins, ruler, tape measure.

For each session Doris will provide demonstration materials, printed class handout and samples of fabric and lace garments. For those who aren't bringing their own specialty tools, she will have borrower tools, broomstick knitting needles, Tunisian hooks and hairpin looms available.

Magical Broomstick: Crochet Lace in a Flash

Ride a "broomstick" as you learn this fascinating technique for crochet lace. Using a normal crochet hook plus a giant knitting needle, you can create gorgeous, swirly, loopy lace for a scarf or stole in a flash. See three different methods of working broomstick lace and choose the one that's happiest for you. Discover ways of incorporating Broomstick lace in your crochet as trims or insertions. After a bit of practice, you'll be ready to work on a project of your choice, in your favorite yarn.

  • Workshop Length 3 hours
  • Materials
    • For practice: small skein of smooth or slightly textured, light or neutral colored worsted weight yarn ; size I-9 (5.5mm) crochet hook; size 35 (19mm) knitting needle, any length, for broomstick
    • For project: yarn of your choice, with sufficient amounts on hand for completing project (approximately 200 yd for narrow scarf, approximately 500 yd for stole, depending on yarn weight); size crochet hook appropriate for your yarn; large knitting needle for broomstick; suggested size 50 (25mm) for chunky/ bulky yarn , size 35 (19mm) for worsted weight yarn and DK, medium sportweight/medium sock yarn , or size 19 (15mm) for fine sock/fingering weight yarn

Taste of Tunisian

Come and try your hand at today's must-do technique, Tunisian (or Afghan) crochet. Using a large gauge Tunisian hook, you'll learn the basics of making Tunisian fabric that has drape, how to start Tunisian fabric, identifying the strands and stitches, different ways of working into stitches, shaping Tunisian stitches, finishing and assembling. For inspiration, and for those already familiar with Tunisian, we'll get a closer look at the Tunisian shell stitch used in the sample garments from Crochet Lace Innovations.

  • Workshop Length 3 hours
  • Materials
    • Some smooth or slightly textured worsted weight yarn ; size I-9 (5.5mm) crochet hook; size L (8mm) or M (9mm) Tunisian hook, any length.

Exploded Lace

I love nothing more than taking inspiration from a vintage doily or thread crochet design, exploding the gauge with thicker yarn and big hooks, tinkering with the structure and making things to wear. In this class I will pass along some of the ways I've learned to successfully explode all kinds of lace, from bedspread motifs to handkerchief edgings to doilies.

  • Workshop Length 3 hours
  • Materials
    • Some smooth or slightly textured worsted weight yarn in a light or neutral color ; size I-9 (5.5mm) crochet hook; ideas, images or patterns of vintage crochet you'd like to try exploding.

Going Seamless: Demystifying Top-Down Construction:

In this workshop I will discuss my signature MO, how it was developed, how raglan shoulder shaping is achieved, why it works. With demonstration modules drawn from some of my more infamous designs, I will take you step by step through the shaping of a top-down seamless garment. You'll be invited to try on and critique the fit of a range of sized garment samples, in the process finding out how to get your perfect fit.

  • Workshop Length 3 hours
  • Materials
    • NA

Hairpin Lace: An Overview

In this two part class, we will take a fresh look at an old-fashioned lace technique, Hairpin Lace. In Session One, using a regular crochet hook and a hairpin loom, you'll learn how to make the basis for hairpin fabric, the hairpin strip. Then, in Session Two, with a short stack of strips, we will touch on some of the myriad ways to finish, edge, join and assemble hairpin strips for garments, accessories and trims.

  • Workshop Length 6 hours (3 hours Session One, 3 hours Session Two)
  • Materials
    • Some smooth or slightly textured worsted weight yarn ; small skein in main color, small skein in contrast color; size G-7 (4.5mm) or size H-8 (5mm) crochet hook; adjustable hairpin loom.

KAREN RATTO-WHOOLEY'S CLASS SCHEDULE:
THE BASICS OF LACE:
Using the skills learned from her Nonna, Karen will explore 3 different lace techniques.  Each piece ultimately will become a part in a beautiful study of techniques in a gorgeous shawl.

1) Basic Crocheted Lace - Learn the basics of crocheted lace; How to select the right hook for drape and texture while working on a classic openwork lace piece.
2) Venetian Lace I: Venetian Lace was created in the 16th to 19th centuries with needle and thread connecting motifs with bar like structures to create relief patterns in the lace. We will learn to duplicate this technique in using Crochet motifs and chains.
3) Venetian Lace II: A different style of Venetian Lace includes Motif work that is similar to tatting. Usually done with the tiniest of threads, we will use Lace weight yarn instead to create some traditional Venetian motifs.
4) Putting it all together: Once all of our lace pieces are finished, we will crochet them together to form the shawl using a lacy joining method.

CROCHET BEADED ROPES:
Venetians are known for their glasswork. Building on Karen's Italian upbringing, she brings to us a fun project using glass beads. Though we won't be actually making the beads, we will be learning to make beautiful crocheted beaded bracelet ropes. Learn how different size beads and starting chains can change the look and feel of your ropes. They will be beautiful pieces of Italian Style art!

MYSTERY LACE PROJECT:
Our last project of the week will include a mystery lace project. Karen will be teaching a lace class project from her newest book due to be released in mid-Fall 2010. Keeping with the lace theme, this class is one NOT to be missed. As details can be revealed, we will update you on what to expect. Be one of the first people actually to make this spectacular project.

Exclusive cooking demonstrations and tastings of regional dishes are part of every vacation package we offer.

doris chan imageDORIS CHAN:When I was a girl my mother was on a mission to teach me all the needle arts she learned as a girl; she hit me with sewing, embroidery, cross stitch, knitting and thread crochet. None of the above "took". Many years later when it occurred to me that you could swap out thicker yarn and big hooks for my mom's crochet thread and steel hooks I revisited crochet. So I can't say that crochet has been a life-long obsession. But I'm making up for it now.

In the course of my crochet odyssey I have designed many garments and accessories for yarn companies, magazines and books and have written articles and essays about crochet technique. My own titles, Amazing Crochet Lace (Potter Craft, 2006), Everyday Crochet (Potter Craft, 2007) and my new book (Potter Craft, due to be released in Spring 2010) were wonderful opportunities for me to tell-all about my crochet ideas, my occasional angst and my modus operandi of top-down, seamless construction. I am a proud professional member of the Crochet Guild of America and also belong to The National NeedleArts Association. You can find me lurking at Ravelry.com, Crochetville.org and on my blog, doriseverydaycrochet.blogspot.com.

Our FSSA workshop, coming in September 2010, marks my world teaching premier, which sounds way classier than admitting that this will be the first time I've ever taught crochet! I look forward to meeting everyone and spilling all about how I roll. Er, how I crochet. Expect me to bring my best game, offer an in-depth exploration of the designs from my new book and spread around some yarn joy.

B) China Doll Crochet Tunic designed by Doris Chan. Knit in Filatura Di Crosa Brillante.

head shotKAREN RATTO-WHOOLEY learned to crochet from her Italian grandmother at age 7 in 1974. In two hours she literally was "hooked". Never quite happy with the way a pattern was designed, she would always adjust something to suit her needs, or create her own. In 1998, Karen started designing and selling patterns at the urging of another well known crochet designer she met through an online crochet list. Since then she has had patterns published by a variety of magazines and books. Her latest books are Top Down Sweaters, Savvy Single Crochet and Shower of Cables.

Karen is also a nationally recognized Crochet Instructor, and her classes include a wide range from basic crochet to advanced techniques which include several different types of media in crochet.

A California native, Karen resides in the Seattle, Washington area with her husband and two kids.
